Industrial Engineer Day in the Life

To get a sense of what a typical day is like for a Industrial Engineer Intern, take a look at a day in the life of Dustin who works in the Faribault, Minnesota plant.

7:45 a.m.
Arrive at work and go over the schedule for the week with Paul (Industrial Engineer, my supervisor).

8:00 a.m.
Get laptop set up at my desk and check e-mail and calendar for the week.

8:10 a.m.
Gather information and put together weekly journal entries and e-mail them to Paul.
8:25 a.m.

Looked over spreadsheets and other documents created last week to get a better idea of where I need to start for this week.
8:40 a.m.

Talked with Paul about touring burger line at Willmar plant and printed map so he knew where to pick me up in the morning.

8:50 a.m.
Talked with Randy (Plant Manager) about setting up tour of plant for my dad and brother.

9:00 a.m.
E-mailed Pat and Mark (Third Shift Supervisors) about touring on Tuesday night.

9:15 a.m.
Talked with Paul about plan for touring Willmar plant tomorrow. Set up times and e-mailed Jeff Olson about how to handle my hours since I won’t be at the plant tomorrow.

9:30 a.m. Worked on writing a proposal for a project I’ve been working on. Set up cost estimate sheet with numbers I got from the contractor.

9:55 a.m.
15-minute break

10:10 a.m.
Worked on CAD drawings for parts that were fabricated in the shop. Added titles and descriptions to drawings. Touched up dimensions and checked for errors in the drawings.

12:00 p.m.
Lunch Break

12:30 p.m.
Worked on CAD drawings.

3:00 p.m.
15-minute break

3:15 p.m.
Discussed how we are going to go about doing the time studies on certain departments with Paul.

3:40 p.m.
Finished up some of the CAD drawings, talked more about burger line.

4:20 p.m.
Wrote daily journal of things I’ve done and started packing up computer and other things on my desk.

4:30 p.m.
Leave for the day.
