Maintenance Engineer Intern

This full-time (40 hours per week) summer (or summer + semester) internship will last approximately three to six months. You’ll be challenged to apply your technical and leadership skills through project involvement such as:

Construction and design to include CAD drafting, specification writing, construction inspection and engineering design work.
Preventive Maintenance Writing.

Faribault, MN
Montevideo, MN
Pelican Rapids, MN

Qualified candidates will have completed their junior year with a minimum 2.7 GPA; possess demonstrated leadership, persuasive skills, strong work ethic, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Maintenance Engineer Intern Day in the Life

To get a sense of what a typical day is like for a Maintenance Engineer Intern, take a look at a day in the life of Derek who worked in the Willmar Avenue Plant in Willmar, Minnesota. This is an entry from his eighth week at Jennie-O Turkey Store.

7:00 a.m.
I arrive at work and drop off my lunch in the cafeteria fridge. I then go to my locker and change into my rubber boots, frock, and hardhat before going to the plant floor to punch in for the day.

7:10 a.m.
I log onto a computer to check my email and other important information that may affect my tasks for the day.

7:30 a.m.
I then begin working on gathering more information on the roof exhaust fans so that I can accurately write the preventative maintenance task instructions for those pieces of equipment. This was one of the projects I was given to work on while at Jennie-O.

8:30 a.m.
Every Monday I have a meeting with my supervisor at this time. We go over how the previous week went and what my expectations are for the upcoming week. Any questions that I may have can often times be asked at this meeting.

9:15 a.m.
Take my first 15-minute break and think about how best to complete the weekly tasks discussed in the morning meeting.

9:30 a.m.Continue gathering information and writing the task instructions from earlier. As I complete the task instructions, I email them to my supervisor so he may review them.

11:30 a.m.
At 11:30 I had some questions for the refrigeration maintenance worker in charge of the exhaust fans, so I paged him and had set up a short meeting for 1:30 PM.

11:45 a.m.
I sat down in the cafeteria and ate lunch. I get a 30-minute lunch break.

12:15 p.m.
I returned to work. I went up to the roof to check some information on the exhaust fans. Unfortunately, it was a very warm day out, so the roof was not an exciting place to be.

1:30 p.m.
I returned from the roof for my 1:30 meeting. The meeting lasted about 30 minutes.

2:00 p.m.
I then again started working on the preventative maintenance task instructions. The whole process took a long time due to the fact that there are 92 exhaust fans on the roof, each of which has its own list of task instructions.

3:00 p.m.
I again logged onto a computer to check any emails that I may have received during the day.

3:30 p.m.
I shut down my computer and punched out for the day.
