Production Management Intern

The full-time (40 hours per week) summer (or summer + semester) production management internship will last approximately three to six months. During the internship, you will be introduced to one of our state-of-the-art facilities and given the opportunity to apply your technical, managerial, problem-solving, and leadership skills to a production project such as:

Line drawing, plant layout, and evacuation drawing updates.
Verification of workstations and capacities.
New equipment evaluations for yield efficiencies.
Evaluations of yield and supply usage.
RTE GMP performance and compliance.
Employee safety and ergonomics analysis.
Redbook procedure verification.

Qualified candidates will have completed their junior year with a minimum 2.7 GPA; possess demonstrated strong interpersonal, leadership, decision-making skills, and well-developed written and verbal communication skills.

Production Management Intern Day in the Life

To get a sense of what a typical day is like for a Production Management Intern, take a look at a day in the life of Sean, who works at the Processing Plant in Faribault, Minnesota. This is an entry from his fifth week at Jennie-O Turkey Store.
During the first half of his internship, Sean works with one of the Production Supervisors of each department in the plant for one week. This week he is working in the White Meat Dress area.

7:30 a.m.
I arrive at work, check my email, and meet with the Supervisor I will be working with today. Together, we check the orders for the day, look over employee punches from earlier in the week, and prepare for the upcoming day.

8:00 a.m.
I monitor the employees punches in to make sure they are according to the policy.

8:30 a.m.
The trainer goes through how to trim the breast meat and I try some of the different positions on the line.

9:30 a.m.
I go with the Training Supervisor as he checks with many of the new employees to see how they are doing.

10:15 a.m.
The Training Supervisor and I talk with a new employee that is having trouble learning the new positions. We are trying to figure out why he is having trouble and what we can do to help him.

10:40 a.m.
We fill out some work orders on repairs that need to be done around the plant.

11:10 a.m.
I go on break. We take two thirty minute breaks each day.

11:45 a.m.
I check my email and go over the yields from the week with the Training Supervisor.

12:30 p.m.
I attend the Supervisor’s Meeting where we discuss what is currently going on in the plant and review how the departments and the plant are doing according to the standards set.

2:00 p.m.
I sit in on a meeting that one of the supervisors is having with his employees. We are discussing any issues in the department and reviewing the importance of many of the policies. We are also celebrating the five-year anniversary of one of the employees in the department by having cake, beverages, and presenting him with a certificate.

3:20 p.m.
I take my other thirty minute break.

4:15 p.m.
The line is finished for first shift. I monitor the employees as they turn in their cotton gloves, rubber gloves, mesh glove, and chest protector to ensure that all employees turn in their personal protective equipment (PPE).

4:45 p.m.
I go home for the day.
